Improved Electric Drive Range

The most anticipated upgrade the 2022 VW ID.4 brings to the table will be better range, although the powertrains remain the same, with the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) ID.4 models being powered by a single 201-horsepower electric motor and the AWD models equipped with dual (front and rear) electric motors that make 295 horsepower combined.

Although Volkswagen hasn’t specified how much more range the new ID.4 will offer, the company says you can expect the EPA All-Electric Range (AER) figures to be higher than the current EPA estimates of 240-mile to 260-mile range on a single charge of the 2021 VW ID.4.

No ID.4 First Edition Model

That being said, the First Edition trim from the 2021 ID.4 will not be available for the 2022 model.

Faster Charging and More

Besides, the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 will be able to charge quicker than its predecessor, as the 2022 models are expected to get a more powerful onboard charger which increases the charging capacity from 125 kW to 135 kW at DC fast-charging stations.

An impending over-the-air (OTA) update, slated to arrive later this year, will introduce an auto-hold feature for the electronic parking brake and a new Plug & Charge system that makes it easier to charge the ID.4 at VW’s Electrify America fast-charging stations by eliminating the need for physical cards.

Revised Pricing

Among the least anticipated updates, however, the Volkswagen ID.4 will be getting $765 more pricer across all the models this year. This takes the starting price to $41,955 for the 201-hp, RWD ID.4 Pro, and $45,635 for the ID.4 Pro AWD, while the 295-hp, RWD ID.4 Pro S will now start at $46,455 and the top-spec AWD Pro S model at $50,135, after adding the $1,195 destination fee but before any incentives.

However, if you are looking to get the ID.4 in 2022, you may still have to work around these prices, as the ID.4 is still in huge demand, with some dealers making market adjustments as high as $10,000.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen is prepping its US manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, TN for the Made in USA 2023 ID.4 which will start production in September or October this year. Keep reading our blogs for more updates on the US-made Volkswagen ID.4.
