Volkswagen introduces the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R alongside the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI at the Chicago Auto Show
The Volkswagen Golf R has been delighting performance enthusiasts in Janesville, WI area for a very long time. 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Design and Performance
To begin with, the fifth-generation 2022 Golf R is slightly longer and sportier than its predecessor but still carries the same styling hallmarks, such as the distinctive C-pillar. The all-new performance hatchback comes with a redesigned front end featuring a more sharply raked hood, new signature LED headlights and an available light bar in the front grille on both sides of the updated VW logo.
The 2022 Golf R will be available in a single trim level and gets a beefed-up version of the 2.0L Turbocharged TSI® in-line 4-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower (27 hp more than the previous Golf R) and 295 lb.-ft of torque. The engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Updated All-Wheel Drive
The 2022 Golf R features a completely overhauled version of Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, sending 100% available torque to the rear wheels. The available torque-vectoring directs the torque to either the left or the right rear wheel, helping in better cornering, more confident handling, and higher cornering speeds.

The 2022 Golf R features a blue grille line, blue brake calipers, and additional blue accents inside and out to distinguish it from the 2022 Golf GTI, a new wheel design, and more aggressive front and rear bumpers and diffusers than on the 2022 Golf GTI. It also comes with the following features:

- 14-inch cross-drilled front brake rotors with blue-painted dual-piston calipers and R logo
- LED headlights with AFS
- Illuminated grille, side mirrors with puddle lamp ‘R” logo projection
- R-specific paddle-shifters (DSG only)]

- Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro with 10.25-inch digital display
- 10-inch MIB3 Discover Pro infotainment system with navigation and voice control
- Car-Net with WiFi
- Wireless charging
- Large two-piece rear spoiler
- Quad-tip exhaust, and
- Body-colored side sill extensions
The 2022 Golf R comes with Volkswagen’s standard IQ.DRIVE safety suite includes front collision warning, dynamic road sign display, light assist (high beam control), blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, adaptive cruise control, Park Assist automatic parking assistant with front and rear Park Distance Control.
Pricing and availability
Available in a signature Lapiz Blue Metallic, Pure White, and Deep Black Pearl exterior colors, the 2022 VW Golf R starts at $44,640 (including destination). However, if you opt for the DSG transmission, you’ll need to shell out $800 extra. Volkswagen has not announced an official launch date yet. However, you can expect to see the 2022 Golf R and 2022 Golf GTI in dealerships across the US, including us at Frank Boucher VW of Janesville, in the fourth quarter of 2021.
